Year One Trip to St Fagans Jan 09

As part of the topic of Houses and Homes, Year One visited St Fagans Museum of Welsh Life. It was a cold but sunny day and the children really enjoyed their look at homes in the past!

We all thought the houses were very dark inside even though some were lit by candles. There was a fire in nearly all of the houses which helped to keep them warm and gave off some light.

Some of the houses didn't have a tap or running water inside. People used to go outside to collect the water. Rhyd Y Car cottages show how homes developed through the ages.

We thought the school house was a bit gloomy and wondered why there was a bell inside.

Many of the houses had vegetables growing in the gardens.

The Celtic roundhouse was very dark and smokey. When the fire went out we couldn't see anything.

We talked to the Miller about how he made flour and decided that this house was  built for an important person because it had two tall, large chimneys.

We had a great day and it helped us to understand why electricity and energy is so important to our homes today. We also had a go at building our own celtic roundhouse from clay and straw in school.
